Action-packed week to start November. First, the mid-term elections in the U.S. are tomorrow, November 4th. Market participants have not seemed to focus much on this round of midterms, but the elections will still dominate the headlines in the first half of the week.
In Europe, the monthly ECB meeting is on Thursday. The baseline expectation is for no introduction of QE, as policymakers wait to see how the recently introduced measures impact inflation in the coming months. As usual though, Draghi’s press conference will be crucial to setting policy expectations. The Bank of England also releases its policy statement on Thursday morning.
As for economic data, it’s the first week of the month, which means jobs data on Friday in the U.S. The ISM Manufacturing release is this morning, and the ISM Non-Manufacturing release and the ADP employment report are on Wednesday morning. In Europe, the Manufacturing PMI data today was essentially in line. The services PMI data and retail sales is released on Wednesday.
Finally, earnings season is in full swing, with reports this week focused in the media and consumer sectors
